Barber Chair Hydraulic Pump Size & Compatibility Guide
A replacement hydraulic pump should never be selected by appearance alone. Two pumps may look almost identical in a product photo but use different mounting holes, screws, bottom connections, pedal layouts or lifting ranges. A mismatch can make installation impossible, change the working height of the chair or create instability between the pump and base.

The Dimensions That Determine Pump Compatibility
The following measurements have the greatest influence on whether a hydraulic pump can replace an existing unit.
1. Closed Height
Closed height, sometimes shown as initial height, is the overall pump height when the pump is fully lowered. It affects the chair’s minimum seat height.
2. Stroke
Stroke is the vertical travel available from the lowest to the highest pump position. A longer stroke provides a greater adjustment range, but it does not automatically mean that the pump will fit the chair.
3. Maximum Pump Height
The theoretical maximum pump height is calculated as:
Maximum pump height = closed height + stroke
This figure describes the pump only. The final seat height also depends on the chair frame, cushion thickness, connection plate and base structure.
4. Mounting Pattern and Screw Size
For a flat-bottom or plate-mounted pump, measure the mounting-hole pitch from the center of one hole to the center of the opposite hole. Also confirm the number of mounting holes and the screw specification.
For a tapered-bottom pump, check the lower connection diameter and the central fixing screw. A similar outside shape does not guarantee that the taper or bolt will fit.

5. Base Type
Hydraulic pumps can be matched with stainless steel round or square plates, chrome-plated round bases, aluminum five-star bases or iron five-star bases. The base opening, mounting pattern and load requirement must all correspond to the pump.



6. Pedal and Lever Configuration
The position and shape of the operating lever must leave enough clearance around the chair frame and base. DB02 uses a single-lever design, while DB04 uses a dual-lever design. Both are flat-bottom pumps, but the operating layout is different.

How the Seven Models Differ
DB02 and DB04: Flat-Bottom Pumps for Plate Bases
DB02 and DB04 are both designed for compatible stainless steel round or square plate bases. They share a 60 mm mounting-hole pitch and M8 screws, making them suitable candidates when a buyer needs a flat-bottom pump for a styling-chair project.
The most visible operational difference is the lever arrangement:
- DB02 uses a single lever.
- DB04 uses a dual-lever design.
Their lifting ranges are also slightly different. DB02 has a closed height of 339 mm and a 160 mm stroke, while DB04 has a closed height of 335 mm and a 165 mm stroke. Both reach a theoretical maximum height of approximately 500 mm.
The correct choice should be based on the existing pedal layout, chair-frame clearance and the buyer’s preferred operating configuration, not on height alone.
DB14 and DB17: Tapered Pumps for Five-Star Bases
DB14 and DB17 use a 48 mm tapered lower connection with an M10 fixing screw. They are designed for styling chairs fitted with DB509-type aluminum or iron five-star bases, typically around 640 mm in overall diameter.
Their final lifting ranges are close:
- DB14: 307 mm closed height, 145 mm stroke and 452 mm maximum height.
- DB17: 310 mm closed height, 140 mm stroke and 450 mm maximum height.
Because the dimensions are similar, buyers should pay particular attention to the taper, central screw, pedal position and the connection between the pump and the chair mechanism.
DB16: A Reclining-Chair Pump for Large Chrome Round Bases
DB16 is intended primarily for reclining salon chairs. It uses a 115 mm mounting-hole pitch with M6 screws and is commonly matched with a DB402-type chrome round base in 550 mm or 600 mm diameter.
Its 312 mm closed height and 140 mm stroke provide a theoretical maximum height of 452 mm. The model is rated for a 200 kg load.
DB16 was the sample used for the complete testing described in WellBeauty’s EN 1494 test report. The report also lists DB01 through DB29 as products from the same series. This means the report should be read according to its stated model scope; it should not be described as a separate complete test performed on every individual model.
DB18: Compact and Economical for Styling Chairs
DB18 is the shortest model in this comparison. It has a closed height of 266 mm, a 98 mm stroke and a theoretical maximum height of 364 mm.
It uses an 88 mm mounting-hole pitch with M6 screws and is designed for compatible six-hole chrome round or square bases. Its compact lifting range and economical positioning make it suitable for styling-chair programs where a lower initial height is required.
DB18 should not be selected as a direct substitute for a taller pump unless the complete chair geometry has been checked. A shorter pump can noticeably change the customer’s working height and the chair’s final appearance.
DB22: Heavy-Duty Pump for Vintage Barber Chairs
DB22 is the highest-capacity model in this guide. It is rated for a 300 kg load and provides a 180 mm stroke from a 325 mm closed height, giving a theoretical maximum height of 505 mm.
The pump uses a 115 mm mounting-hole pitch with M8 screws and is intended for a compatible four-hole extra-large chrome round base. Its primary application is a heavy vintage barber chair with a substantial metal frame and reclining structure.
A higher load rating does not make DB22 a universal upgrade. The base, chair frame, mounting plate and fastening system must also be designed for the heavier assembly and corresponding load.
How to Measure an Existing Pump Before Ordering
For the most reliable comparison, remove the chair seat or expose the pump connection points before measuring.
- Lower the pump completely and measure the closed height from the bottom contact point to the top mounting point.
- Raise the pump fully and record the total height.
- Subtract the closed height from the raised height to confirm the stroke.
- Measure mounting-hole pitch center to center, not from the outside edges of the holes.
- Record the number of holes and the screw diameter.
- For a tapered pump, measure the lower connection diameter and identify the central screw.
- Photograph the pedal, upper connection plate, underside of the pump and base opening.
- Record the base type and diameter.
Measurements should be taken in millimeters. A clear photo with a ruler or caliper visible beside the relevant connection point is more useful than a general chair photo.
Information to Send for a Replacement Check
To confirm a replacement efficiently, send the following information:
- A full photo of the chair.
- A front and side photo of the existing pump.
- A photo of the pump’s upper connection plate.
- A photo of the bottom connection or base opening.
- Closed height and stroke.
- Hole pitch or tapered-bottom diameter.
- Screw size and number of mounting holes.
- Base type and outside diameter.
- Required quantity and destination country.
If the original pump cannot be removed before ordering, send the chair model, base photos and as many visible dimensions as possible. In that situation, compatibility remains subject to final sample confirmation.
Compatibility Is More Than Matching the Height
The most common selection mistake is choosing a pump because its overall height looks correct. Height is only one part of the system.
A pump can have the right lifting range and still be incompatible because:
- The mounting-hole pitch is different.
- The screw diameter is different.
- The bottom connection is flat instead of tapered.
- The pedal interferes with the chair frame.
- The base opening does not match.
- The chair frame or base is not designed for the pump’s load class.
For distributors and chair manufacturers, the safest purchasing process is to confirm a technical drawing, test one sample with the intended chair and base, and approve the complete assembly before placing a production order.

- DB14 or DB17 for styling chairs with five-star bases.
